about

Note: This is not an Organizing Committee record!

The Absentees is the result of exploring the creative misuse of synthetic music, particularly diffusion-based commercial sound generation tools. This is a collection of songs designed to orient myself to exploring how to sonically abuse these tools in ways that brings awareness to the falseness and absence of human contributors - but also to see if there were ways to "hack" these systems in ways that produced sounds that were not commercially focused pop.

The "Gaussian Splat" tracks are the result of prompting diffusion models for noise. With image models, this results in abstractions, because the machines can't render noise for technical reasons. For Gaussian Pop (Gaussian is the form of noise that diffusion models use), I tried to find the same result sonically. The results are sometimes pop-ish noise rock, but the Gaussian Splats succeed at being abstract soundscapes.

Other tracks are designed to test the limits of the vocalizations: the syllabic tracks are sometimes the result of typing lyrical punctuation (",,,", "!!!", or ASCII art of a paper clip).

The more human-sounding tracks are the result of blending noise prompts and lyrics reflecting on training data as a corrupting "haunting" of past memories being forced back into recirculation. The sources of this training data are "The Absentees," referenced as the authors of this work.

Placing an AI generated album on Bandcamp, however critical my intentions were, is not ideal. I hate to see what becomes of this place when AI generated music takes over. It's my hope that this critical intervention into AI music systems at least pushes the envelope forward into the deliberate misuse of AI systems that reflects human agency, rather than collections of EDM and grunge "bands."

But I acknowledge that I am part of the problem.
